Top 10 Conservancies in Kenya.

Kenya is famous worldwide for its exciting safaris. A major reason for this is the success of its wildlife conservancies. These are special protected areas, often run by private landowners or local communities, that manage the land for both wildlife and people. They provide an exclusive safari experience, limit the number of the tourists and allow activities like walking safaris and night game drives that are banned in Kenyan national parks. Most importantly, the money from tourism directly supports the conservation world and the communities that own the land.

Greater Maasai Mara Conservancies.

The Maasai Mara ecosystem is surrounded by a ring of conservancies that expand the protected area for the famous Great Migration and Big five.

Mara Naboisho Conservancy.

This is known for having one of the highest densities of lions in Africa; this conservancy offers exceptional game viewing without the crowds of the main reserve. It is the largest partnership between hundreds of Maasai landowners and tourism operators, ensuring the local community benefits directly from keeping the land open for wildlife.

Mara North Conservancy.

This is one of the biggest conservancies in the Mara area. It acts as an important corridor for animals moving between the Mara National Reserve and the surrounding group ranches. Its beautiful savannah landscapes are home to large herds of plain game, which in turn support many predators.

Olare Motorogi Conservancy.

This is a pioneer in the low-impact, high-value tourism model. This conservancy is known for the incredible big cat sightings, particularly leopards and lions. It is located near the Mara River, making it an excellent spot for viewing the annual wildebeest migration spectacle.

Ol Kinyei conservancy.

This conservancy was the very first one in the Mara to be fully owned and then run by the local Maasai community. It is a smaller area that demonstrates an effective model of community-based conservation, offering a pristine wilderness experience with a strong focus on cultural interaction.

Laikipia plateau conservancies (Rhino sanctuaries).

The Laikipia region is famous for its innovation in conservation and its critical role in protecting endangered species, especially rhinos.

Ol Pejeta conservancy.

Ol Pejeta is the most important sanctuary for black rhinos in East Africa and a home to the last two remaining northern white rhinos in the world (both female). It is also the site for the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, making it unique for chimpanzee viewing in Kenya.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy,

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Lewa is considered the birthplace of Kenya’s modern conservancy movement. It was instrumental in saving the black rhino from extinction. It offers spectacular views of Mount Kenya and is a critical habitat for the endangered Grevy’s zebra and the reticulated giraffe, along with the big five.

Borana Wildlife Conservancy.

This is located next to Lewa; Borana manages a large area of pristine land and, together with Lewa, forms a secure habitat for the largest black rhino population in Kenya. It is known for its beautiful landscapes and a focus on horseback riding safaris.

Other main conservancies.

These conservancies protect different ecosystems across Kenya, each with a unique purpose and a special kind of safari.

Namunyak wildlife conservancy.

This is situated in Northern Kenya, this conservancy is known for the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, a community-run rescue and rehabilitation center for the orphaned elephant calves. The conservancy is owned by the local Samburu people, providing an example of how remote communities can lead conservation efforts.

Namunyak wildlife conservancy

Selenkay conservancy.

This is located close to Amboseli National Park. Selenkay was one of the first Maasai-owned conservancies outside the Mara. It protects the migration route for the huge elephant herds that roam Amboseli and the surrounding areas. Staying here offers an intimate safari experience with views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.

This is located in the Tsavo ecosystem in the south, this private sanctuary is the key movement of animals, particularly elephants, between the vast Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks. It offers a unique Kenya safari experience with a historical charm and a successful track record in wildlife recovery.

These ten conservancies are the backbone of Kenya’s conservation success. They offer some of the most exclusive and meaningful safari experiences in Africa, guaranteeing that tourism directly supports the protection of the wildlife and the prosperity of the local people.
