The park is varied and vibrant habitats but can generally be divided into two large areas by the Bujumbura-Uvira highway: (1) a larger floodplain reality, comprised of acacia trees, grasslands, and (2) a river delta area where the Rusizi River connects with Lake Tanganyika.
