Exploring Rusizi National Park and Beyond.

Burundi is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. For travelers, the experience is genuine and untouched. While many people pass this country by, Burundi’s spectacular natural scenery is nothing short of exceptional, and Rusizi National Park represents an accessible and rich wildlife experience. Rusizi National Park is within easy driving distance of the capital of Burundi, Bujumbura, and is a wonderful way to connect with the country’s diverse ecosystems connected to the river and wetlands world.

Rusizi National Park: The River’s Reach.

Rusizi National Park, or Parc National de la Rusizi, is likely Burundi’s most well-known and visited nature reserve. The park is situated next to the Rusizi River, which flows along the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and flows into the extensive Lake Tanganyika. The park is varied and vibrant habitats but can generally be divided into two large areas by the Bujumbura-Uvira highway: (1) a larger floodplain reality, comprised of acacia trees, grasslands, and (2) a river delta area where the Rusizi River connects with Lake Tanganyika.

The activity in the wetlands of the park area is a Ramsar wetland site and a biological hotspot. The periodically flooded area creates an ideal environment for various flora and fauna.

Wildlife Highlights: Hippos, Crocs and Birds.

Although Rusizi does not rank highly on the “big five” wildlife list, much of the wildlife is aquatically focused, with guaranteed views of some iconic animals. the park was initially made a park as a means to protect its large population of hippopotamuses that inhabit the area; therefore, visitors will be virtually guaranteed to see some large pods of hippos wallowing lazily in the river channels. Lying in wait along the muddy bank are large Nile crocs doing what they enjoy best basking in the sun. There is something thrilling about seeing a crocodile while enjoying the peace and serenity of nature.

Aside from the hippos and crocs, the park is a diverse range of habitats, ranging from papyrus swamps to acacia woodlands, where visitors may see a variety of antelopes species, including the rare and elusive Sitatunga, which is a semi-aquatic antelope that thrives in wetland conditions and habitat. It is not uncommon to see a few monkeys and a few small predators.

Best Safari Offers in Rusizi.

The best way to experience the unique ecosystem of Rusizi is to participate in activities that take advantage of the flat landscape and river setting of the park.

Boat Safaris: This is the formal safari experience of the park. Cruising along the Rusizi River is the best way to come within close distance of the hippos and crocs. Being on the water provides a serene experience that provides unique photographic opportunities, especially during soft light of the sunrise or sunset that allows exceptional birdwatching safari experience.

Birdwatching: Rusizi is heaven for bird watchers, with well over 200 species recorded. The mix of water, forest and savanna draws resident and migratory birds alike. Keep an eye out for the distinctive Malachite Kingfisher, the impressive African Fish Eagle, and the many storks and herons found in the delta region. Engaging a local guide who owns a quality pair of binoculars is a good idea to see some of the more elusive species.

Nature Walks: Walking safaris with an armed ranger take you into the terrestrial section of the park on foot. This gives a different perspective from being in a vehicle, allows you to get closer to smaller flora and fauna, track animal prints, and enjoy the serene environment of being in the grasslands.

The Great Lake Tanganyika.

A visit to Rusizi would not be complete without visiting the areas adjacent to the park, in particular the stunning Lake Tanganyika. It is the second deepest freshwater lake in the world and the north shore is easily accessible from Bujumbura. The lake offers a different type of relaxation and adventure:

Beach Relaxation: Beaches lined with white sand are in close proximity to Bujumbura and are perfect for unwinding on and enjoying the tropical weather.

Water Activities: Guests can enjoy kayaking, standup paddle boarding, or simply swimming in the clear waters of the lake. The lake is known for its unique fish species, making it an interesting (but difficult) place to fish.

Local Culture: A special cultural experience is to interact with the local fishermen who use traditional wooden boats (pirogues) to catch ndagala at dusk (small sardines).

Planning Your Untamed Adventure

Rusizi National Park is located 15 kilometers northwest of Bujumbura, making it easy to visit. The park is best visited during the dry seasons, that is, from June to September and December to February, when the park trails are less muddy, and the animals congregate around the remaining water sources to enhance wildlife viewing.

To increase your trip in this “untamed” corner of Burundi, we recommend visiting with a local tour operator like Nyumbu Beyond Journeys. They will be more familiar with the necessary permits, as well as having knowledgeable guides to provide useful information on the park’s ecology and how to safely navigate the park water.
