Choose your safari style and timing.

East Africa offers a range of safari types. Do you want a classic vehicle safari to see the big five. Are you keen on the intimate experience of gorilla trekking. Or maybe you prefer a walking safari. The type of safari you choose will determine where you go and what you see. Also be aware of the seasons. Dry seasons (June to October and December to February) are excellent for wildlife viewing because animals gather around water sources and the vegetation is less dense. However, the green season (March to May and November) are less crowded, the landscape is lush, and prices often lower.

Get the right visas and vaccinations.

Before you go, make sure you have the correct visa. You can often get these online in advance. If you are visiting Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, you can get a simple East African Tourist Visa that is valid for 90 days. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into most of these countries. It’s a good idea to consult a doctor before your safari to get advice on other necessary vaccinations and antimalarial medication.

Pack smartly and lightly.

Space is limited, especially if you are taking small planes between parks. Its best to pack light, in a soft sided bag. Choose neutral colours like khaki, brown and tan which can help you mix in and do not alarm wildlife. And then avoid bright colours and camouflage print. Bring lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect you from the sun and then the insects. A warm jacket or fleece is also essential for cool mornings and evenings.

Respect the wildlife and the rules.

You are guest in the animal’s home, so tis important to respect them and their space. Always listen to your safari guide. Never leave your vehicle unless in a designated safe area, and avoid making loud noises or sudden movements. When gorilla trekking, always maintain the recommended distance from the primates to prevent the spread of diseases during the safari.

Be prepared for tipping.

Tipping is a good and then common practice on safari and is a great way to show your appreciation for the hard work of your guides, trackers and lodge staff. While its not mandatory, its highly customary. It’s a good idea to budget for tips in small US dollar bills.

Stay hydrated and protected.

The African sun can be very strong. Its crucial to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of bottled water, which is provided at all reputable lodges and camps. Also use a high, quality insect repellent, especially at dawn and dusk, to prevent mosquito bites.

Power and communication.

Electricity can be limited in some remote safari camps. It’s a good idea to bring a power bank for your devices. The British style three pin plug (Type G) is used in most of East Africa, so a universal adapter is essential. While Wi-Fi is available at many lodges, it may be slow or only available in common areas.
