Embark on our uniquely hand-crafted photography journey through Uganda that begins with searching for the elusive shoebill in the Mabamba swamps after you fly into the Entebbe International Airport. From there we will head North to Kibale National Park, where we will spend a day tracking and photographing troops of wild Chimpanzees. After that, we move to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where we will enjoy a mixture of game drives and boat cruises to see more hippos, elephants, buffalo and if we are lucky, the famous tree-climbing lions of the region. Our primate photo safari ends with double gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where we will spend our time photographing two different large troops of Silverback Gorillas, which will be an experience you will never forget!
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Arrival, Pickup from Airport & Karibu Uganda!
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our Nyumbu Beyond Journeys professional safari guide who will assist you with your luggage and ensure a smooth transfer to your hotel in Entebbe. Whether you’re arriving during the day or at night, we ensure a safe and seamless transfer to your accommodation, setting the stage for an unforgettable journey ahead with us.
Day 2: Shoebill Birding at Mabamba Swamp
After breakfast, you’ll head out on a remarkable birding excursion at Mabamba Swamp, a renowned bird-watching destination near Entebbe, famed for its population of the elusive shoebill stork. This early morning adventure begins with a scenic boat ride through the tranquil papyrus marshes, where expert local guides lead you to the prime spots for observing these prehistoric-looking birds.
The swamp is not only home to the shoebill but also hosts a diverse array of bird species, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts. As you navigate the waterways, you’ll have ample opportunities to capture stunning photographs and witness the unique behaviors of the shoebill in its natural habitat. Day 3: Transfer to Kibale National Park
After enjoying an early breakfast, your guide will meet you at your hotel to provide an overview of the exciting Uganda safari ahead. Once you’re briefed on the itinerary and what to expect, you’ll set off for Kibale National Park. The journey to the park is nothing short of breathtaking, as you’ll be treated to some of the most beautiful landscapes Uganda has to offer. As you drive, you’ll pass through charming villages where you can catch glimpses of daily life, with locals going about their routines. The lush green forests that line the route create a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere, offering a hint of the natural wonders that await you.
The journey from Kampala to Kibale National Park takes about five hours, but with the stunning scenery and the anticipation of the adventures ahead, the time will pass quickly. By the time you arrive at Turaco Tree Tops, you’ll be ready to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and wildlife of Kibale National Park.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience and Relaxation
The chimpanzee habituation experience offers an unparalleled opportunity to spend an extended period with our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. This immersive adventure takes place in Uganda’s dense tropical forests, where you will join researchers and guides in the habituation process of wild chimpanzee groups. Unlike standard trekking, this experience allows you to spend an entire day observing and learning about the intricate behaviors, social structures, and daily activities of these fascinating primates. From their early morning routines to their evening nesting, you’ll gain deep insights into their lives, all while contributing to vital conservation efforts. Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast, your guide will drive you to Queen Elizabeth National Park, home to a high concentration of Uganda’s mammals that include tree climbing and savannah lions, elephants, warthogs, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, Cape buffaloes, hippos, and leopards. There are also more than 600 species of birds including the African spoonbill, pied kingfishers, fish eagles, pelicans, and vultures.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s second-largest park, located at the base of the majestic Rwenzori Mountain Range, adjacent to Lake Edward and Lake George. Lions are often sighted both in and at the entrance to the park.
Be ready to see huge numbers of hippos and elephants, and keep your eyes on the lookout for a leopard lazing in the sunshine. In the late afternoon, you will relax at the lodge.
Day 6: Experiential Guided game drives and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise.
This day begins with an early morning safari drive through the vast landscapes of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Accompanied by expert guides and trackers, you’ll embark on a thrilling expedition to locate and observe lions and leopards in their natural habitat. Queen Elizabeth National Park is renowned for its thriving populations of these majestic big cats, and the experienced guides will share their knowledge about their behaviors, habitats, and conservation efforts.
Afternoon Boat Safari along the Kazinga Channel
In the afternoon, you will embark on a relaxing yet captivating boat safari along the Kazinga Channel. This 40-kilometer-long natural channel connects Lake George and Lake Edward, creating a haven for diverse wildlife. The boat safari offers a unique perspective, allowing you to witness an abundance of aquatic and terrestrial species along the shores.
Day 7: Tree-Climbing Lions and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Your adventure begins with a morning game drive in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famed for its unique population of tree-climbing lions. You’ll witness the extraordinary sight of these majestic predators resting in the branches of large fig trees, a behavior rare among lions. This remarkable experience provides excellent photographic opportunities and deepens your understanding of these fascinating creatures’ adaptive behaviors.
Following the excitement of observing tree-climbing lions, you will embark on a scenic transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The journey takes you through diverse landscapes, from rolling savannahs to lush highland forests, showcasing Uganda’s rich ecological variety. Upon arrival at Bwindi, you’ll be greeted by the dense, mist-covered forest that is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
Day 8: Gorilla Trekking Experience and Relaxation at the Lodge
You’ll embark on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, immersing yourself in the enchanting world of mountain gorillas. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides and trackers, you’ll journey deep into the heart of the forest in search of these gentle giants. As you trek through dense vegetation and rugged terrain, the anticipation builds until you finally encounter a gorilla family in their natural habitat. You’ll witness these magnificent creatures up close and observe their social interactions and behaviors.
After the exhilaration of gorilla trekking, you’ll return to your lodge for a well-deserved relaxation. Day 9: Second Gorilla Trekking at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Batwa Cultural Experience
Today after an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla tracking for the second trek. You will encounter one of Mgahinga’ s endangered mountain gorillas. For most people, this is the absolute highlight of their tour in Uganda.
The time taken to track the gorillas can be as few as 2 hours to as many as 7 hours. Once the gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience.
Day 10: Transfer Back to Entebbe for Departure
After breakfast at the lodge, you will drive back to Entebbe Airport. As you pass through the equator, there will be a stop for the requisite snapshot and a bit of souvenir shopping.
