Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
The tour begins with your arrival at Kigali International Airport, where you will be greeted by your Nyumbu Beyond Journeys safari guide. After a brief introduction and orientation about your Rwandan Safari, you will embark on a scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park, which is approximately two hours away from Kigali. This park is renowned for its stunning landscapes and as a habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas.
Upon arrival at the park, you will check into your accommodation, which can range from luxury lodges to budget-friendly options depending on your preference. After settling in, you may have the opportunity to visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where you can learn about local traditions and engage with the community. Dinner will be served at your lodge, followed by an early night in preparation for the next day’s trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
On the second day, after an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules and safety guidelines. The trekking groups are organized based on fitness levels and preferences. You will then set off into the dense rainforest of Volcanoes National Park with experienced guides.
The trek can last anywhere from one to several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family assigned to you. Once you find them, you will spend up to one hour observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. This experience is both thrilling and humbling as you watch them interact within their family groups.
After returning from the trek, there may be time for relaxation or additional activities such as visiting nearby lakes or engaging in community projects. Dinner will again be provided at your lodge.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking and Transfer to Kigali
On your final day, after breakfast, you will prepare for another exciting trek—this time to see the golden monkeys that inhabit Volcanoes National Park. Similar to gorilla trekking, this experience involves hiking through lush forests but is generally less strenuous than gorilla trekking.
Golden monkeys are playful and often seen jumping through trees; spending time with them offers a unique perspective on Rwanda’s biodiversity. After enjoying this encounter, you’ll return to your lodge for lunch before checking out.
In the afternoon, you’ll begin your journey back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule or personal interests, you might have time for a city tour or visit sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial before heading to the airport for departure.
