Serengeti Grumeti Reserve : Everything you need to know before you go.

The Serengeti Grumeti Reserve is world famous for its endless plains and the massive animal migrations, but there is a “hidden gem” on its western border called the Grumeti Game reserve. This private conservation area offers a much more exclusive experience than the main national park.

If you are looking for a safari where you can see the Big five without being surrounded by many tourist vehicles, then Grumeti is the place to be. It serves as an important corridor for wildlife moving between Serengeti national park and Masai Mara National Reserve, making it a hot spot for the dramatic nature scenes.

What makes Grumeti Special.

The biggest difference between Grumeti and the main Serengeti National Park is exclusivity. Because Grumeti is a private reserve, the number of guests and vehicles allowed inside is strictly limited.

Why is Serengeti Grumeti the best Place for migration?
Mara River

This means when you find a pride of lions or a leopard in a tree, you will likely have the sighting all to yourself. Additionally, because the reserve is not bound by the same strict rules as the national park, the guides are often allowed to drive off-road to get you closer to the animals.

You can also enjoy unique activities like night game drives and guided walking safaris, which are generally not permitted in the main park.

The great migration and River crossings.

While most people think of the Mara River when they hear about the Great Migration, the Grumeti River is actually the first major obstacle the herds must face. Between June and July, hundreds of thousands of Wildebeest and zebras gather on the banks of the Grumeti River, preparing to cross.

The river is home to some of the largest Nile crocodiles in Africa, leading to intense and dramatic moments as the herds plunge into the water. Even if you miss the migration, the reserve has incredible resident wildlife year-round, including the massive lion prides that can sometimes number up to 60 individuals.

The best time to visit Grumeti

Timing is everything when planning your trip to Grumeti. If your goal is to see the Great Migration and then the heart-pounding river crossings, you should aim to visit in June or July.

By this time, the large crowds have left, but plenty of ‘’resident’’ animals like elephants, giraffes, and big cats remain near the permanent water sources. The ‘’Green Season’’ from January to March is also beautiful, offering lush landscapes and great birdwatching, though the thick bush can make spotting animals a bit more challenging.

How to get there and where to stay?

Getting to Grumet is relatively easy but requires some planning. Most travelers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and then take a smaller ‘’ a domestic charter flight’’ from Arusha directly to the Grumeti or Sasakwa airstrips.

This flight takes about 45 or 60 minutes and offers stunning views of the plains from above. Alternatively, you can drive from Arusha, but it is along journey (about 8 hours) that usually involves an overnight stop at another park along the way.

In terms of accommodation, Grumeti is known for the high-end luxury. You will find a world-class lodge and then tented camps, such as those run by Singita or &Beyond, which offer private plunge pools, gourmet dining and spectacular views of the savanna.

While these options are more expensive than standard campsites, the level of service and then the privacy of the reserve make it a “once in a lifetime” experience for many with Nyumbu Beyond Journeys.
