Detailed itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Your Hotel in Arusha.

On the 1st day of the safari, when you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a friendly representative from Nyumbu Beyond Journeys will greet you and welcome you to Tanzania. Then after, you will be transferred in a comfortable private safari vehicle to your luxury hotel located in Arusha. Once you check in, you can relax by the pool, enjoy a massage at the spa, or simply enjoy the magnificent views of Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Later in the evening, you will meet your hiking guide for a complete briefing regarding your trek. The guide will review your climbing gear and provide important information about the climbing process, acclimatization, and safety. Dinner will be served at the restaurant, where you will dine on delicious local and international foods. You’ll enjoy a lovely and comfortable sleep that evening, preparing for the trek ahead.

Day 2: Discover the wonders of Arusha National Park.

On the 2nd day of the safari: Prior to starting the climb, your day will be spent exploring one of Tanzania’s most underrated and underappreciated areas, Arusha National Park. After breakfast, you will drive a short distance to the park, where you’ll enjoy a guided walking safari with an armed ranger. The walk leads you through lush forested slopes, open plains, and the sparkling Momella Lakes where you may spot giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and myriad flamingos.

The aim of today is for you to relax as well as acclimatize. You will have the opportunity to stretch your legs, take in the fresh mountain air, and acclimatize your body for the higher altitudes to come. After the picnic lunch, you will return to your hotel in Arusha for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Machame Gate (1,800 m) to Machame Camp (3,000 m).

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Machame Gate, the official starting point for your Kilimanjaro journey. While preparations of your equipment are packed by the porters, you will be taken care of with park registration. The trail begins with a trek through dense rainforest, where the air is cool and the sounds of exotic birds and monkeys can be heard.

The excursion begins with a gentle climb that steepens as you get higher. Your guide will start at a slow and steady pace to assist with acclimatization. Today, you also encounter a picnic lunch on the trail, prior to arriving at Machame Camp (located at the edge of the forest zone). When you arrive, you will find your luxury tent, where your bedding and warm water for washing will be provided for you. After dinner under the stars, you will retire for the evening.

Day 4: Machame Camp to Shira Camp 2 (3,840 m).

After breakfast, Today’s trek takes you out of the forest to the moorland zone; the landscape dramatically opens up. The air is thinner and the views of Mount Meru and Shira Plateau are spectacular. The trail is steep for today, but the pace will be steady and slow.

You’ll take breaks for water and pictures and get into Shira Camp 2 in the afternoon. This campsite is situated at a high plateau with grand views of Kibo Peak and Kilimanjaro’s western glaciers. Your team will provide warm water for washing and a substantial dinner made by the mountain chef. The evening is usually spent over hot drinks, storytelling, and watching the sunset in monotone, golden color.

Day 5: Shira Camp 2 to Lava Tower (4,600 m), then Barranco Camp (3,960 m).

After breakfast, you’ll begin your gradual climb to Lava Tower, a large volcanic tower that is a good acclimatization point. Eventually the air will become thinner and you will feel the altitude setting in, but your guide will regulate the pace to keep it comfortable. At Lava Tower, you’ll stay and have lunch and a little time to rest at the higher elevation as well.

Subsequently, you’ll at last descend into the Barranco Valley, a stunning location filled with massive lobelias and senecio plants. This descent will allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude, supporting the “climb high, sleep low” approach. You will arrive at Barranco Camp in the late afternoon, surrounded by awe-inspiring vistas of the Barranco Wall and the untamed nature surrounding the camp.

Barranco Valley

Your camp will be fully set up with warm bedding, warm meals and a tent dedicated to simply relaxing. Dinner will be served just as the stars will begin to shine against the African night sky, ending another fulfilling day on the trail.

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp, then Barafu Camp (4,673 m).

The day begins with an exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, which is a famous section of the Machame route. While it looks overwhelming and intimidating, it’s all manageable with the support of your guide. You’ll again witness some of the most dramatic views of your whole trek.

Once you have climbed over Barranco Wall, you’ll continue on small ridges and into valleys to get to your lunch stop at Karanga Camp. After a brief rest, you’ll continue your final ascension up to Barafu Camp; this is your last stop before the summit. This camp, unlike your others, will be a fair bit cooler. Once you arrive, your team will assemble the luxury camp, including warm sleeping situations and hot drinks. You’ll eat dinner early and rest well, as your next day’s adventure, your summit attempt, will start before midnight.
