Solo Travel Top Tips & FAQs

  1. Who are our solo safari holidays for?

Nyumbu Beyond Journeys solo Journeys are suitable for all adventurous individuals seeking new experiences in the wild destinations of East Africa. There are many reasons our clients choose to travel solo – they might wish to unwind from daily life, to discover and see incredible wildlife, to experience the thrill of the wilderness for themselves, and so on.

  1. Will I be joining a group?

No. We tailor-make safari and beach holidays that take you to the real Africa – no readymade tours or set departures. We aim to accommodate our solo travellers within social camps and lodges, unless an alternative approach is preferred. Singles-friendly properties have communal dining areas and other spaces for social interaction. And game drives are often operated on a shared basis, usually per person per game-viewing vehicle.

  1. Is my solo safari single supplement free?

Unfortunately, most safari camps and lodges do charge a single supplement. That said, there are some excellent exceptions to this rule. Please speak to our experts to find out more about these camps – for a quick overview, take a look at our blog here.

  1. Will I be the only solo traveller at camp?

It is difficult to say. However, traditionally a safari is an authentic social activity, and communal dining in camp is very much the norm. More often than not, guests gather together for evening meals and socialise around the mess area and campfire.

  1. Will I be picked up from the airport and transferred to my safari camp or lodge?

Yes, unless you have booked your own private pick-ups. All our tailor-made trips can include a meet-and-greet service provided by our respected ground-handler partners.

  1. What type of dining experience can I expect?

As mentioned, many camps and lodges usually offer communal dining to in-house guests, making for a friendly and lively dining experience.

  1. Will I be sharing the safari vehicle?

Yes, unless you have chosen to make your own arrangements.

  1. How safe is it to travel to East Africa solo?

It is very safe, as you will always have a host with you, every step of the way on your tailor-made safari trip. If you have any concerns about solo travel, please feel free to discuss these with a member of the YZ team.

FAQS for Solo Journeys

When I travel solo, do I have to pay more?

There is no additional cost for single travellers on our tours if you share a room with another traveller of the same sex, with whom we can pair you up. If you would prefer your own room, then you will need to pay a single supplement, which varies depending on the safari.

Is there free time on a Nyumbu Beyond Journeys Safari?

The majority of our tours include some free time built in. You can see how much free time is included by looking at the day-to-day itinerary but as a general rule we include almost all meals meaning that solo travellers will always have company when dining.

How big are group sizes on Nyumbu Beyond Journeys Safari?

The average Nyumbu Beyond Journeys group size on our solo holidays is between 9 and 12 clients. In our experience this is a perfect size, as the group is not too intimidating to locals, and it allows for those unplanned moments, like being invited into someone’s home for tea, or to share a picnic. It also means there are plenty of interesting, like-minded people to talk to over dinner. It is not unusual for more than half of the people in each group to be travelling solo.

How does the rooming work on a solo traveller holiday?

In our tour price, unless otherwise stated you are guaranteed a bed in a twin room, which you will share with another person in your group of the same sex. However, you can choose to pay a single supplement if you prefer a room of your own. This option is available on most of our tours and is usually available for all nights. If there are any nights of the safari where we cannot offer a single supplement (usually due to a limited number of rooms being available), this will be clearly detailed in the ‘Travelling Solo and Single Supplements’ section. The single supplement cost varies from trip to trip.

Can I travel solo even if I’m not single?

There are many reasons why people travel solo with us and it’s absolutely not just because they’re single. Regardless of whether your partner is able to travel with you or not, you are still in good company.

As a female travelling solo, will I be safe on this trip?

Yes, the safety of our customers is our  priority. Travelling with a group is a reassuring sure way to stay safe and you will have a tour-leader with you throughout who will look out for the whole group. In fact, many women choose to travel with us on our small group tours for precisely the added confidence that this way of travelling brings.
